Cases in Victoria

As of 2 September 2022, there have been 65 cases of monkeypox recorded in Victoria. Active cases* are currently at 27. The department conducts active monitoring of cases and contacts to prevent further spread in the community.

*Active cases are those who are currently symptomatic and isolating from the community.

Key messages

• Monkeypox is a rare disease that is caused by infection with the monkeypox virus.
• Since mid-May 2022 there have been cases of monkeypox reported from multiple countries that are not endemic for monkeypox virus, and local transmission has occurred in these countries.
• Monkeypox may be spread from person-to-person through skin-to-skin contact, contact with contaminated surfaces or items, and respiratory droplets.
• Local transmission is occurring in Australia, and anyone developing symptoms that may be consistent with monkeypox should seek medical care.
• While the current outbreak has disproportionately impacted men who have sex with men, it is important to note that monkeypox can affect anyone who comes into prolonged contact with someone with monkeypox.
• The department conducts active monitoring of cases and contacts to prevent further spread in the community.
• Monkeypox is an urgent notifiable condition, in accordance with Victorian statutory requirements.
